RichMarine - Sons of Horus challenge complete. (I think)

Postby RichMarine » Tue Feb 18, 2014 2:25 pm

Quick intro- I have been listening to the IC podcast for a long time and I have to say that it's inspirational. I've been painting a long time and the work being done in these forums has inspired me to give the challenge a go. And give forums a go.

First 1000 pts re-Edited 16/05/14

Centurion 75 complete
thunder hammer

Legion Terminator squad 239 complete
Plasma blaster
2 combi weapons
2 Power Fists
Pair of lightning claws
Grenade harness

Contemptor 200 complete
Kheres pattern assualt cannon
DCCW heavy flamer

1st Tactical squad 325 complete
20 marines:
Vexilla
nuncio vox
CCWs
Sergeant:
Power sword
Melta bomb

2nd tactical squad 160 complete
10 marines
Sergeant:
Power axe

999

I've already purchased and painted one of the praetors from the forge world 2 pack and ordered 10 MkII shoulder pads with decals, and brass etch (took advantage of the free delivery in jan).

Edit; I've taken out my preator as It doesn't really fit in with the rules as I semi completed it before I entered the hobby progress challenge. In his place I've added a captain (centurion), and a command squad with 2 chosen. I've also condensed the tactical squad into one for the 1000 points as per my 2000 point army intent which is 2 full 20 man tactical squads.

final edit; command squad removed; can only pick a command squad for every praetor in the army. I'm taking a captain so I can't use them yet! Really gutted because I was looking forward to painting the standard. Instead I've opted for a second tactical having just finished 20! To fit it in the captain and chieftains are all now bare bones with power weapons.

So colours.... SoH not for the faint hearted. I had a few different takes on this. One of the pieces in white dwarf initially gave me the idea, but I didn't quite believe the painters recipe of using a green wash over grey. so I tried Vallejo USMC tank crew and bought the highlighted version and gave it a green wash.

Pictures to come When I figure out how to upload pictures from my iPad.

Figured it out:

The above was basically a Vallejo USMC tank crew with a green wash which I though was too green,

Then tried mixing the USMC tank crew with the highlight to get a happy medium, which was too pale,

Then went back to USMC tank crew with dawnstone grey,

Then gave up and went into the happy clappy store (my nickname for the local GW)

The advice was ok which was to paint them boltgun metal and add a green wash...

I didn't like this and wondered if I made a mistake with SoH,

I then took the plunge and used the forge world recipe and...

So I chose the Terminator Praetor because he looked cool...

Base coated and painted the aquilla black to be a bit different.

And onto the Contemptor, I wanted to stay away from the dual kheres, but I've magnetised the arms if I choose the go to the more shooty side, and went with the grinding a marine into the dirt look.

Unfortunately I decided to enter this challenge half way through painting the guy.

Cheers for the comments, Here's an image of my progress so far, although the I phone camera doesn't pick it out well I'm trying to use a different range of metallic colours to make the mechanisms look more interesting and set them apart from the gold and silver used on the trim. Guess it will look better when I do the highlights/washes.

Like the green, love the Praetor and the dread. That pose seems to be the contemptor's ideal :)

Contemptor taking a lot longer than anticipated, hopefully should be finished by the end of the weekend. The next part of my army should be arriving soon!! and damn forge world and their bundle deals. not sure that the 30 marine bundle is worth it now :? Thinking Siege breakers will be cooler.
