Juravial - Ultramarines - Now Apocalypse Sized! (Nov Done)

Post by Juravial » Sun Jan 05, 2014 4:38 pm

Hello all! I decided when they came out that I was going to do a Space Marine Ultramarines army based almost completely on Marneus Calgar. I think everything about the "Lord of War" is freaking awesome and his rules really fit the theme that I wanted to go with for my army.

+++++Begin Transmission+++++
++++Recommendation From Marneus Calgar - Lords of Terra++++
+++Document Type: Classified+++
++Re: Mortalis Zone Operational Support Team++

Insertion Team Alpha (as specified by Imperial Codex doctrine a25189):

Codex regulation requires at this stage of war that a Chapter Master must accompany the insertion team for his tactical acumen. Since smooth operation in relatively unknown territory is preferable, he will choose 4 of his honor guard as an initial vanguard to the operation. Marneus Calgar leads Chapter Champion Elonar Chovall and tactical coordinators Hedron Govall, Raynor Govall, Delinol Govall, and Garinol Govall. Their previous post on the star fort Indomitable (for which they survived for years under Demonic assault) prepared them perfectly for close quarters fighting in the tunnels of a space hulk.

Five Vanguard Veterans of the First Company shall also lend their support. For the purposes of rending through bulkheads, a Power Fist from the Armory has been requisitioned. For close quarters expertise in dealing with xenos threats, four Lightning Claws have also been requisitioned (in two pairs).

Close range fire support shall come from two Tactical Squads of five Space Marines each. Codex Astartes does not support the use of Krak Missiles or Melta Weapons, as they may cause explosive decompression. Therefore, one Combat Flamer and one Plasma Gun have been requisitioned for use by Specialist Uranor Govall and Oranor Govall, as their split-geneseed allows them maximum special weapons coordination.

One Prometheus Class Dreadnought shall accompany these tactical squads to provide combat capability. Brother Malinor One-Eye of the 4th Company has extensive use with the Heavy Prometheus Flamer, and should be considered for interment after the loss of his right eye, right frontal cortex, right leg, and right arm in the assault on Tarsis Ultra.

Finally, two pairs of three Bike Squads from 8th Company shall be placed for optimum movement of a primary objective or recovered relic. Codex Astartes suggests standard bolter weaponry on only two of the bikes; the others shall have either a Mars Pattern Grav-gun or a combat flamer.

++++++End Transmission++++++

For those who don't feel like reading through the fluff, I do have a list that equals 1,016 points and conforms to the standard Zone Mortalis Attacker for a Ultramarines Space Marine army.

1 Marneus Calgar
4 Honor Guard + 1 Relic Blade

5 Vanguard Veterans + 4 Lightning Claws (2 pairs of 2) + Power Fist

5 Man Tac Squad + Flamer
5 Man Tac Squad + Plasma Gun

Dreadnought + 2x Heavy Flamers

3 Man Bike Squad + 1 Grav Gun + 1 Flamer
3 Man Bike Squad + 1 Grav Gun + 1 Flamer

Edit: As of 3/2/2014, list looks like this now:

1 Marneus Calgar
4 Honor Guard

5 Vanguard Veterans + 4 Lightning Claws + 1 Power Fist

5 man Tactical Squad + Plasma Gun
5 man Tactical Squad + Grav Gun
5 man Tactical Squad + Plasma Gun

Dreadnought + switch storm bolter for heavy flamer

3 Man Bike Squad + 1 Grav Gun + 1 Flamer

That equals 1013 points. It may change as further playtesting shows whether it needs to be changed, but this list worked for me tonight and will probably work well in the future.

2nd Edit - 3/4/2014

I have completed the first 5 months of the hobby progress challenge, from feb-june. All the models for my augmented list are painted (and then some). You may notice that for some months I elected to paint up a full squad rather than a half squad, this is just because its easier than going back and doing it later. To make things easier for Carl, I have included below the progress month pictures, unpainted and painted, and what page of the thread they are on.

Feb Unpainted pg 1 Painted pg 1
March Unpainted pg 2 Painted pg 2
April Unpainted pg 2 Painted pg 3
May Unpainted pg 3 Painted pg 3
June Unpainted pg 4 Painted pg 4
Rest of the army - Unpainted pg 4 Painted pg 4

Edit 3/18/2014:

Hey guys, just figured I'd update my army list to 2000 points. I think this list will do fairly well, but have yet to playtest it. The thought is that the Tactical Squads combat squad and deploy, and first turn the Ironclad and drop pod come down to wreck house. Then, the terminators (hopefully) teleport in turn 2 using the locator beacon on the Drop Pod. Stormtalons and Stormravens would hopefully also come in turn 2, though it would be ok if it came in turn 3. Barring any unforseen destruction, the Stormraven would go into hover mode in the turn after that, discharge Calgar and his honor guard (without moving), then shoot every weapon it has including the 4 nasty missiles at something.

I know its light on the troops, and if it seems like my troops are dying too much each game to hold objectives, I'll take out the honor guard and put in a few squads of scouts with sniper rifles or maybe some with land speeder storms.

Marneus Calgar
5x Honor Guard

Stormraven Gunship + Extra Armour

Tactical Squad x 10 + Lascannon
Razorback + Twin-linked Lascannon

Tactical Squad x 10 + Lascannon
Razorback + Twin-linked Lascannon

Terminators x 10
Assault Cannon x 2

Stormtalon Gunship w/Skyhammer Missile Launcher
Stormtalon Gunship w/Skyhammer Missile Launcher

Devastator Squad x 10
2x Plasma Cannon, 2x Missile Launchers

Edit: 3/29/2014

I have decided to give my list a little versatility in the HQ session, so I'm also painting up a librarian so that I can switch him out for Marneus whenever I feel the need to use a little psychic power. I can fill out the extra 100 points difference with some more honor guard, because I painted up a full squad of 10 when I did it. Erm, I also kinda just wanted to paint up a librarian too.

Edit 4/6/2014:

It is with a sad heart that I take the last Dreadnought out of my army. I really, REALLY like dreads, but in every game it suffers explosion after explosion (last time at the inglorious hands of a bunch of Tau Fire Warriors with EMP grenades). I don't mind taking units that underperform, especially if I like the unit, but I dislike taking an underperforming unit that cannot do what it is supposed to do (combat, in this case). I did win that game, but he smashed my Ironclad's hopes and dreams. So, I'm gonna replace him with a Devastator Squad. I feel like I need a few more actual bodies on the table anyway.

Also, that Stormraven is a damn death trap. Every time I put my honor guard in, only Marneus Calgar walks out of the smoking wreckage the turn after it comes on the board. I'm either gonna have to disembark them the turn they come on or something, because that thing gets constantly shot out of the sky.

edit: 4/26/2014

Having completed the last of the 2014 challenges, below is a list of what pages each of the initial and finished months for each challenge appear.

July Challenge - 2 Stormtalons - Initial page 6, Finished page 6
August Challenge - Librarian - Initial page 7, Finished page 7
September Challenge - 10 Devastators - Initial page 7, Finished page 7
October Challenge - 2 Razorbacks - Initial page 7, Finished page 8
November Challenge - 3 Vindicators - Initial page 8, Finished page 9

I will be continuing with this army in an Apocalypse fashion, so hopefully that is not a problem. I find that I have enjoyed documenting my progress and I will probably continue to do so until this army is finished. Also, on page 9 I posted my new 15,000 point Apocalypse sized army list. I may have gone a little overboard, but I can't wait to paint up some of the newer parts of the army.

Ok so, I'm gonna start with my Veteran Vanguard team. As you can see, I got excited and basecoated one of them a dark blue before stopping and snapping a picture so it would count for the Feb challenge. Also, the finished pictures will be much better than this, I promise!

I had a few hours the last few evenings, so I decided to paint up one of the Vanguard Veterans. I really like power axes, and in normal games of 40k I'm going to combine these 5 guys with Marneus Calgar's honor guard to make 10 honor guard guys.

As sort of a test subject, I like the thought of smooth blue with an almost inked gold counterpoint. In person, the blue looks really soft and the gold is super shiny. The base goes with my Realm of Battle board, which is a snowy landscape (I was kinda going with a Damnos feel to go with my Necrons).

Also, his name is Turiel.

Edit: I managed to catch up on both Horus Heresy: Massacre IC podcasts while I painted. I really enjoyed listening to that and it really got me looking pretty hard at 30k.

So, I had a bunch of time last night and decided to get the last of this squad painted up. February challenge completed, one day before Feb 1st!

I also broke down and did a little bit of research on how to get file size down to that magical 250 KB size without making it so grainy. I'll have to say, the new ipad air does take amazing photos. I touched up a little on the dude I was working on and ended with a slightly deeper blue than I originally had. Also, all my power weapons are magma power weapons, because I really like the colors and it stands out against the otherwise blue/gold model.

In the 2000 point normal army, three of these guys will split off with 4 more honor guard and Marneus Calgar to form an awesome honor guard squad. In zone mortalis, they will stand on their own as a vanguard vet squad.
