Irondog's "Retro" Ultramarines - CHALLENGE COMPLETE!

Post by Irondog » Sat Dec 14, 2013 11:34 pm

I've done a couple of painting challenges over on Warseer in years past, but this will be my first run at the HPC on the IC forums. I've been in a nostalgic mood in regards to 40k lately, so I'm going to go for a classic Ultramarines army in a 2nd edition color scheme. Think brighter blue, yellow trim on the shoulder pads, red casings for the weapons, and of course... the green rims on the bases.

Looking forward to it. Now all I need to do is come up with a list :)

Good to see you signed up this year Irondog!

I'll expect to see these Ultramarines across the table fighting over objectives (read shots of whiskey) some time in the future!

Thanks guys. I've been meaning to do this army for quite a while. Doing the Zone Mortalis force first will be interesting. 1000 points of 'ground pounders', mostly infantry with a Dreadnought or two, with the vehicles coming in at the end. Nothing like front-loading all the grunt work and saving the fun stuff until the end :D

And yes, Whitestagg... shots of whiskey are my objectives of choice ;)

2nd Company. Led by Sicarius. I'll probably use the new plastic Space Marine captain for Sicarius since I'm not a big fan of the static pose on the official GW model. I'll be throwing Tigurius in there too since I have the old metal model and he's an absolute beast as a support character. As far as a list goes, I'm thinking at least 2-3 Tactical Squads, a Dev Squad, and an Assault Squad so I can make full use of the Ultramarine's Chapter tactics.

After those basics are covered, I want at least one Dreadnought, some Terminators, some Sternguard and several Tanks. By the end of this thing I'll probably have to rock double force org at the 2000 pt. level in order to fit all the elites in there.

Writing the list is going to be tough. All the stuff is so good, cramming all of what I want into 2000 pts. is gonna be tricky.

There'd be a good chance you would get a digital supplement if they were 3rd!

I love seeing all the old school markings. Many years ago I did some commission work and one of my clients had me do a whole company of bloods angels. Second company if I remember correctly. I used all the markings from the old Angels of Death book. Dude even had several of those old metal speeders. All the finecast haters don't even know real clean up and assembly work...lol

Wouldn't do me much good since I don't own an iPad... hell, I don't even have a smartphone. I'm a 'pencil and paper' kinda guy when it comes to rules for my toy soldiers. If the rules don't come in a physical book, I don't need 'em. :)
