Yes! I love it! It's like the Dick Tracy Movie of Space Marines. I'm psyched about that.

I changed my list slightly, removing the Dreadnought and Land Speeder, and adding in a tooled up captain and some equipment for him and the tactical Marines. My vow for this month is to paint up the captain and a combat squad for the Tactical Marines:

I thought I'd try doing up a sergeant banner, but I'm not crazy about it:

Nice looking Ultras. Loving the old school models and paint scheme. Doing a similar project myself this year :)

The skin tones you've got going on the Captain and the Sarge look awesome. Mind sharing the recipe?

Also, for the banner there are a couple of ways to go:

1) find a picture online of an old Ultramarines Sergeant banner and then print it out as a guide to paint over. Kind of a "paint by numbers" sorta thing.

2) cut the banner out and attach it to the model an basecoat it. Then apply a waterslide transfer of the Ultramarines "U" and use that as a base to paint over. The lettering underneath is always going to be tricky, there's just no way around it. You can make it easier by writing the letters lightly in pencil first and going over it with a piantbrush.

Hope that helps... and nice work. Keep it up.

Thanks man! I actually saw your project and cursed to myself a little bit since I thought I'd be the only one :P

The skin tone is super duper easy actually! I basecoat the skin with GW Dark Flesh, then paint it all with Dwarf Flesh. I wash that with Reikland Fleshshade, then hit it up with Dwarf Flesh again, leaving the shading in the recesses. I wash that again, and do another layer of Dwarf Flesh in the raised areas. I touch up the edges with Elf Flesh and that's all there is to it! It's super easy and I think I'll make it my go-to for painting skin from here on out.

As for the banner, I traced an image of a banner from the Ultramarines codex, but my brush control wasn't great. I'm thinking I'll just draw up a bunch in Flash or Illustrator and print them out on nice double sided paper.

Since you're going with paper banners for the old school banner poles, I think printing them will work the best. I actually did the same thing back in the day for the HQ units my Space Wolves Army and it worked out great. I printed them using an inkjet printer, on photo paper, at highest quality and they worked out great

Awesome. I love how your Captain is all "Yeah this is a pretty rad gun, but to be honest, I'm just gonna rock you across your jaw with my brass knuckles here."
