Second, below is my current progress of the core units including next step thoughts. As you'll see, most have already been base coated, but I really want to work on the details - layering, shading, gems, weathering, etc.

Eldrad - you'll see a general theme here, but started with the base coating and only really put effort into his rune armor. I'd like to really bring out the ornate details on his witchblade, staff and ghosthelm. If I gain enough confidence, I'd like to line his robe with eldar symbols.

Fuegen - with only the basecoat on, I'd like to really like to work on blending techniques taking his armor from red to orange to yellow.

Wraithguard - one of my first painted units. I'm thinking of re-doing these guys due to all the paint chipping off and not happy with the blue sashes. I think the lesson here is learning how to prime better so these chips don't happen (or maybe splurge on finecast...). Also can't wait to see these guys with gems, especially on the weapon.

Harlequins - the reason I started with Eldar! - the biggest problem here has been indecision. I've played with several themes leading to different techniques (will share more detail on a separate post). I think I've locked down one I like - the blue checkered pattern w purple hair, but realizing I'll need to put more detail in the checkered pattern...fun!

Warp Spiders - not quite sure how I feel about the current paint job. I tried to keep with the standard color theme but added a splash of Honolulu blue (the Detroit Lions fan in me). I do like the look of the Eldar symbol on the back, just not sure it's done right...

Guardian Jetbikes - this is where the color scheme becomes apparent - Go Lions! Had fun with the airbrush here, but the lack of detail on the riders gives the unit a bland look. The goal is to add highlights to the armor, but maybe not as extreme as the one on the right...

You can see those decal lines pretty clearly. Are you using microsol and microset on those? Also, did you gloss coat the decal area before applying the decal?

All those can make a huge difference in making the clear portion of the decal invisible.

I like the blue stripes on the bikes. Looking good.

Thanks for the feedback on the decals! I never thought there could be techniques to hide those (I figured everyone just did freehand (or mask/airbrush).

Heavy Support Weapons - currently these just has the simple base coat and blue stripeing. I played with single directional airbrushing to simulate highlights and shading.

Image

Aegis Defense Line - originally was going to scratch build, but realized I have no time. So I bought and working to modify. Not sure if you can tell, but on one section I took off all the rivets for a cleaner look. i think i like. I quickly painted but not happy with it so plan to redo completely and probably remove ALL the rivets). Although I experimented with weathering with the airbrush and realize I need to spend some time learning techniques from google/YouTube.

Baron - kit bashed him with Hellion, and Archon pieces. Thinking to play with some green stuff for flowing/tattered robe/cape.

Image

Hellions - I'll keep these guys dark to contrast against the main Eldar force, but can't wait to highlight the skyboards and 'try' to create black leather

Image

Kabalite Warriors / Venom - not sure what to do with these guys. Just know to keep them dark. I'm excited to paint up the Venom (I'm better painting vehicles than infantry...)

Commitment schedule:

First the upcoming milestones!

Jan - Game Kastle tourney
Feb - Dundracon
March - Bay Area Open

January goal - "3 colors"

Based on the above, I gotta get 3 colors by DundraCon (1500pts). So...
- Harlequins (including checkers...fun)
- Fuegen
- Baron
- Hellions
- Kabalite Warriors
- Venom

February goal - "conversation pieces"
Considering the quality of players / armies that will be at BAO, I'd like to have 3 units fully painted and that I can be proud of. Thinking...

- Eldrad
- Venom w/ magnetized warriors
- Aegis Defense Line w/ removed rivets/IG eagle
